Legend of the flower Narcissus  — According to Greek myth, Narcissus was bestowed with great beauty by the gods.  Such immense beauty, that no one could turn their gaze away from him.  Narcissus became very conceited, what with everyone always staring at his beauty.  One day, while he was walking close to a cold mountain pool that mirrored his beautiful face, he bent down to admire his reflection.  "You are handsome, Narcissus!" he told himself.  "There's nobody so handsome in the whole world!"  So in love with himself, there he stayed, looking at his reflection until he faded away.  But when the God's discovered, the most beautiful thing on earth had vanished, they decided such beauty could not be forgotten.  They created a beautiful, scented flower which, to this day blossoms in the mountains in spring and is called Narcissus.

The narcissus is most commonly known as the Daffodil.  The name Narcissus is from the Greek word narke, meaning to numb.  Some say it is named for its narcotic fragrance while others belive that it's associated with the poisonous nature of the bulbs.   Both the Greeks and Egyptians related the flower with death.  The Egyptians often hung wreaths of narcissus during funerals.

Narcissus Symbolize Unreturned Love and stands for Vanity and Egoism.

In the Language of Flowers they mean 'Have pity on my passion' and
'I desire a return of affection'.
